Shannan asks …

What is the best way to seek out and build a team of people (I can trust) to help me accomplish my goals and realize my vision(s)? You will obviously be an integral part of that team, as will some of the people who are currently in my life, but I imagine I will need to reach outside of that circle to find people with different skills and available time.

Get yourself out there, girl!

Once you have a vision (your Life’s Purpose) and a drive that emanates from that, your enthusiasm will become infectious … you will naturally draw to yourself the people, things, places that you need.

Some might call this a ‘higher power’, others might say it’s your reticular activation system (you know, the part of your brain that causes you to notice every Toyota Prius on the road when oil hits $4.50 a gallon!), others might say fate or coincidence …

… who cares: you simply will meet the people that you need.

The trick is to weed out the goodies from the baddies … and that is a lot harder.

All, I can say is this:

1. Look for people who always talk about you and ask questions about you, and seem to have very little interest (but no reticence when you ask) to talk about themselves,

2. Avoid all those who seem to be overtly or covertly selling themselves – they need you more than you need them,

3. Look for people who have already made money – lots of it – doing what it is that you want to do,

4. Be prepared to pay for good, technical advice: accountant, attorney, financial adviser, Realtor, etc.

Not being shy (a good thing, in my book), Shannan also asks:

I know you said one question, but if I can sneak in a follow-up… Do you believe that the people who make up that team necessarily need to share my vision and/or passions?

No … of necessity they will not share your vision or passion, so:

a) if they are a paid adviser, don’t tell them … they haven’t made the giddy financial heights that you are aiming for, so they will (in a well meaning, professional way) find a way to bring you down.

b) if they are mentor, tell them your Number, if you must by all means – they will gracefully ignore you, but will give you the correct advice as/when you need it.

I never told anybody except my coach (who helped me through my Life’s Purpose and the associated Number exercises) and my wife what my Number is … the subject just never seemed to come up!

Finally, if any ‘professional’ attempts to contact you via this site to ‘help’ … ignore them … it’s one of the reasons why I came up with the 7 Golden Rules … you just can’t be too careful.

Thanks for the advice, that’s helpful. It’s easy to forget that there are a lot of people out there who do genuinely want to help other people succeed. Now, to find them!
